The
number one need of people is not to understand, but to be understood.
Your coaching will be enormously successful if this is also the number
one need that you fill, in your practice.
Your clients come to you because they need to be heard and understood.
Your clients will not be inclined to listen to what you have to say
until they have unloaded what's on their mind. Once they have the
chance to 'get it all out,' they will then be ready to listen --and
more importantly-- ready to be coached.
Ears Wide Open
As coaches, we have stores of helpful information to share.
Often times, we can't wait to jump in and blurt out our wisdom.
The fact is, that just has to wait. More often than not, all we
need to do is just be there... ears wide open.
It is easy to miss that our strongest clients need this kind of
support, too. Sometimes highly effective and very powerful people have
an even greater need to be heard and understood. Isn't that true for
you?
Observe what happens in your practice this week when you first seek
to understand. Draw your client out. Repeat back to them what you
heard them say, then validate them by showing you understand.
