The Power of Life Coaching
We all crave vibrant health, unique self-expression, meaningful work and fulfilling relationships. We long to play, love, relax, contribute and adventure. Yet, few of us know how to design a well-balanced, fully-expressed and deeply satisfying life.
Life Coaching Unleashes the Life Each of Us Can Have, Fully and with Meaning
“Don’t get too big for your britches.”
“Who do you think you are?”
“No one in this family has ever . . .”
In most cultures and in our families, it’s common to be pressured to fit a predetermined mold, whether in our educational achievements, professional aspirations, or in our personal lives, rather than breaking down the walls and letting our lights to shine.
Our culture tends to emphasize what needs fixing rather than what works. As a society, we focus on what’s wrong without giving much attention to all that is right and growing from there. News broadcasts seem to emphasize the worst of human nature. And, advertising continually reminds us of what’s missing. If we mindlessly take in mass media and mass advertising, we have little support for fully believing in ourselves.
Neuroscience is now showing us much more about how the brain works and specifically how human performance and change manifest. We now know that directing behavior is the poorest method to see that behavior take hold. Positive conversations around challenges and potential pathways to success lead to greater adoption and adaption to doing the things in life we often already “know” we need to do. Knowledge is not the power- the pathway to taking knowledge and integrating it into our lives is the power. And that is what coaching creates- the opportunity for the client to explore, learn and define a path of new positive behavior. The coach co-creates this opportunity with the client. Life coaching supports clients in choosing new perspectives and establishing new beliefs. It also calls them to identify and live from their strengths. They learn to celebrate all of who they are, even the parts they used to label as weaknesses. They find the gifts in all aspects of themselves.
Working with a life coach, clients also focus on what’s working and build on that. If they don’t know what they want in their lives, they explore that. If they do know what they want, they begin to make new choices and create new habits. Life coaching builds a bridge between where the client is and where s/he wants to be.
To serve as a life coach, you will have benefited from life coaching yourself. With a strong, on-going curiosity about your own personal awareness and growth, you will develop the vital coaching skills and tools to successfully coach your clients.
Traits of a Great Life Coach
- Love for and desire to help people
- Great and deep listening skills (both for the spoken and unspoken)
- Willingness to consistently stand in truth
- Strong blend of loving-kindness and the ability to compassionately “call clients on their stuff”
- Gift of recognizing and articulating clients’ strengths
- Large capacity for non-judgment
- Well-developed intuition
- Positive orientation to life
- Good personal boundaries
- Strong business skills
Note that in coaching we come from a place knowing that as humans we are never perfect and that our intention to possess the traits above is as powerful as having those traits. We share with students day one, “You are a Coach” because intention is what brings forward the path to practice and success.
According to a MarketData Report in 2007, an estimated 40,000 people in the US, work as business or life coaches, and the $2.4 billion industry is growing at rate of 18% per year.18 According to the National Post, business coaching is one of the fastest growing service industries in the world. There is plenty of opportunity in today’s world for coaching- where there is change there is demand for coaching.
Anyone who desires a better life and feels compelled to make changes will greatly benefit from coaching. The trick to building a thriving life coaching practice involves working with a specific niche. The most successful life coaches choose not only a narrow coaching focus, but also a narrow target market. The niche and the market will organically develop from the coach’s skills, interests and life experiences. The more passion the coach has for the niche and the market, the more successful the practice. The niches and target opportunities are found across the human experience and coaches have developed incredibly successful practices in areas one might not ever even consider.
